The matriarch of Afghanistan with royal lineage who believes that she is dutybound to save her traumatized country. Having fled the communists in 1978, Mahbouba spent the next 2 decades living and working in the United States – Manhattan and Santa Fe her home away from home. But her comfortable existence was shaken watching the news one evening in 1999, when she saw footage of an Afghan woman in a burqa being executed by the Taliban. From that moment she knew returning to her country of birth to help her people was her destiny. In 2003, she flew to Kabul and got to work. She co-founded the non-profit Afghan Women’s Network and spent the next 20 years fighting for the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. Now with the Taliban in charge those hard fought rights are being threatened. Women are no longer seen or heard and live within the confines of their homes. A fate Mahbouba refuses to accept insisting her voice will not be silenced.

It follows Mahbouba’s journey as her country teeters on the edge of collapse following the Taliban takeover and US withdrawal. She negotiates with the Taliban leadership on neutral soil in Oslo, addresses the United Nations in New York and defends her women’s shelter back in Afghanistan. Director Anna Coren and the crew were in Kabul for the first day of school since the Taliban takeover 7 months earlier. They witness the heartache of female secondary students banned from school within an hour of morning class. Despite the Taliban’s ongoing attempts to erase women from daily life, Mahbouba remains outspoken in her fight to defend the girls and women of her country.

As the girls are not allowed to attend secondary schools and women are banned from the workforce, child marriage is on the rise and millions of people are facing famine. “Mahbouba’s Girls” are in desperate need for donations that provide them with safe refuge, food, legal services, counselling and advocacy.
